Dal Tadka is a staple Indian lentil preparation of soupy lentils tempered with spices. The recipe shared here is a home style version of Dal Tadka. This dal can make with Tuvar Dal and Arhar Dal. This is homemade recipe. So just check it out.


(measuring cup used, 1 cup = 250 ml)

Main Ingredients:

190 grams or 1 cup arhar dal/tuvar dal/pigeon pea lentils
50 grams, 1 medium onion, thinly sliced or ⅓ cup heaped sliced onions
65 grams tomatoes, 1 medium tomatoes or ⅓ cup chopped tomatoes
2 green chilies, sliced, slit or chopped
½ tsp turmeric powder
¼ to ½ tsp red chilli powder
a generous pinch of asafoetida
2 cups water for pressure cooking
1 cup water added later (add as required depending on the consistency you want)
salt as required
2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves


2 tbsp ghee or oil
1 tsp mustard seeds/rai
1 tsp cumin seeds/jeera
4 to 5 medium garlic cloves, sliced or chopped or crushed lightly with their peels on
1 sprig curry leaf or 9 to 10 curry leaves/kadi patta
1 to 2 dry red chilies, broken and deseeded
