The meet organised to rejuvenate party workers ahead of impending local self government and civic polls in the state was attended by senior party leaders, including the leader of the opposition in Gujarat Assembly, Shankersinh Vaghela, party’s Gujarat in-charge Gurudas Kamat, Arjun Modhwadia, Bharatsinh Solanki, among others.

Ahmed Patel said, This is a U-turn government that runs only on empty rhetoric and gimmickry. while addressing the party workers, highlighting how the current government failed on its pre-poll promises and misappropriated policies and programmes that were launched by the Congress-led UPA government.

Ahmed Patel added, there was an opportunity for the party to assert itself in the backdrop of the fading popularity of Modi-led UPA government which has failed to deliver on promises 14 months after it was elected.

He said people have started realising that they have been cheated and that “Gujarat model is a model to cheat people. He exhorted party workers to look for opportunity in the “worsening public perception and sentiments regarding the current government.

This government uses gimmickry to launch programmes such as safai abhiyan and yoga. Yoga is fine, but it is meant to be done at home. But it is being conducted for mere publicity,Ahmed Patelsaid. Without naming Modi, Patel said that “he” said in Karnataka that our cleanliness programme has become a hit, even when the cleanliness on streets of Ahmedabad and Vadodara tells a different story.

he added, “If your safai abhiyan has taken off, then why do you need so much publicity? If you talk of Make in India, there should have been rise in exports, production, but in fact, both have gone down.”

Ahmed Patel said, Whatever Congress government did was keeping poor and downtrodden in mind, be it nationalisation of banks, five-year programme or land reform. As the chairperson of National Advisory Committee, Sonia Gandhi implemented NREGA and Food Security Act, which were targeted at uplifting the poor, those living below poverty line. Jan Dhan Yojana was an old programme of the Congress. In the present government, the poor will get poorer and the number of poor in the country will go up.

Congress leader said the present government was only working for the interest of the corporate while the situation of farmers, women and even small businessmen was worsening.

Calling Vyapam the “grandmother of all scams,” he said that the government was shielding the corrupt with “Z+ security” while whistleblowers were being killed.
