As the UN designated November 5 as the World Tsunami Awareness Day, the first World’s Tsunami Day will be observed on November 5 during the Asian ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016.

The conference organized by India in collaboration with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) will take place between November 2 and 5.

The observance of day will help people in identifying the dangers of tsunami and the importance of warning systems to lower the damage occurring due to catastrophe.

It also aims at reviving traditional knowledge about tsunamis.

The history of World Tsunami Awareness Day lays back to 1854 when a Japanese man, concerned about Tsunamis set on fire rice sheaves on the top of a hill to warn people and they were saved.

In September, India along with 23 countries participated in tsunami mock drill which was organized to increase preparedness to handle tsunami occurring emergency situations.

Following the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 that killed 230,000 people in 14 countries, the Indian government established an Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) under the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) at Hyderabad. Policypulse
